How Long Will Your Band Play at the Wedding?

Filed In: Vendors

Our weekly [Fresh LiME Loves] bit is getting bumped today, but it’ll be back on Wednesday.  Today, let’s talk about your band.

This past Saturday, we had a great, albeit soggy and muddy, wedding in New York.  The bride and groom contracted most of their vendors before hiring Fresh LiME Events, including their band.  Prior to the wedding, the band leader was really great to work with, but I was less than impressed with them on Saturday.  While they were contracted for the 4 hour reception, if I added up the entire amount of time that they actually played, it was probably less than 2 hours.  More like 1.5 hours.  Well, maybe less.

A tip for all brides looking at hiring a band or DJ, but especially a band:  Make sure the contract states the amount of time a band will actually play – not just the number of hours they’ll be there.  I completely understand a band needing to take breaks, but turning a ton of 5 minute breaks in 20 every time, isn’t cool.  On top of that, the band took breaks in the middle of hot dance sets that totally killed the vibe and momentum, and proceeded to put on what I thought was elevator music.  Buzz kill!  And then I got attitude for asking when they were going back on.

So when you’re interviewing bands or DJs, ask them how many breaks they’ll take, how long they’ll really play and what their plan is while they’re not playing.  You want to keep the party going and stopping great music will definitely bring the party down.

Same thing happened at my bride and groom’s wedding on Saturday! At least the bride and groom had fun and probably didn’t notice it as much as I did! I definitely second your advice, great questions for them to ask while hiring their band or DJ!
